## Subtraction I - Whole Number minus Fraction

"Double lesson English, music, biology and finally a double lesson of math with Mr. Smith - I hate mondays!", Oliver thinks as he sits in music lessons. "How long before school is over?"

## Formula: subtract Whole Number minus Proper Fraction

In the case of a *proper fraction*, the numerator is lower than the denominator.

Convert "1" of the whole number and into a fraction that has the same denominator. Then you can subtract the two fractions by subtracting the numerators. The denominator remains unchanged.

^{5}/

_{9}

Imagine:

You have seven apples. Take one of these and divide it into nine pieces. Finally, 5 pieces of it are eaten.

## Formula: subtract Whole Number minus Mixed Number

You can directly subtract the whole number of the mixed number from the whole number.

The remaining task is to solve a problem of the type "subtract a proper fraction from a whole number".

^{1}/

_{4}

Let's help poor Oliver now!

In total Fritz has 6 lessons. Assuming that he has already managed ^{1}/_{4} of the music lesson, he has already completed a total of 2 ^{1}/_{4} hours.

The task is:

First, subtract the whole number part of the mixed number (**2**) from the whole number (**6**).

Then - as in the last example - "one" is taken away from the remaining 4 and converted into a fraction with denominator 4. You can then subtract ^{1}/_{4} from this.

Oliver still has **3 ^{3}/_{4} hours** of lessons to do.

## Formula: subtract Whole Number minus Improper Fraction

In the case of an *improper fraction*, the numerator is greater than the denominator.

First, convert the improper fraction into a mixed number.

The remaining task is to solve a problem of the type "subtract mixed number from whole number".

^{13}/

_{8}

The numerator (13) is greater than the denominator (8), so you have to convert the fraction ^{13}/_{8} into a mixed number:

Now you can subtract this mixed number as described in the formula subtract mixed number from whole number.
